Until such a time, we encourage all Australian’s to wear or fly the flag for any & all patriotic occasions, either by itself or alongside the current ANF subject to individual discretion & the occasion’s context.

If you are a supporter of the design & what it stands for, then join your fellow Australian’s proudly using the flag like any other prominent Australian symbol (think the Boxing Kangaroo but with greater meaning!).

Our 4 Fundamental Intentions:

  1. Symbolise Progress & Unity.

  2. Honour our Past, Present, & Future.

  3. Represent all Australians.

  4. Stir feelings of pride in our Great Southern Land & mateship among its people.

Meaning & Symbolism

  • As on our current national flag, the Southern Cross' current design is proudly displayed both as an internationally recognised symbol synonymous with Australia (NZ's flag gets confused with ours, not the other way around) & as a symbol holding great meaning to Australians (from the oral traditions of Australian Aboriginal astronomy, to its use a waypoint for the celestial navigation of those early settlers through to current outback adventurers).

The stars of The Southern Cross are designated the first 5 letters of the Greek alphabet (in order of lessening brightness), but are more widely known by their Latin names: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, & Epsilon Crucis.

  • The 9 points of the Golden Flyer represent our 6 States, the Northern Territory (NT), Australian Capital Territory (ACT), & all other territories (such as Norfolk Island). This ensures greater representation of our internal territories, whilst maintaining lasting representation for any current & future territories.

Coloured to the exact gold of our national colours & intentionally angled toward the mast, the Golden Flyer portrays all Australians, & who we are as a people, in progress forward & in unity.

  • Blue represents the sea by which we are girt.

It is the voyage that all people of this land once undertook; be it passage over ancestral oceans, arrival by prison ship, modern voyages seeking new beginnings, & everything in between.

  • Black, through its colour & by extending around the Golden Flyer, symbolises a connection to the land by all its people.

"Black is our sunburnt country, scorched earth between flooding rains.
We love her ragged mountains, far horizons & sweeping plains.
Though long droughts test our resolve, amidst her vast jewel sea.
We love this land down under, our home, calling you & me."

  • Red is the blood shed for this nation. From our diggers that fought against tyranny, to the experiences of our First Nations people.

It is the sacrifice of all migrants that shaped our nation, be it bound in chains or of private ambition.

It is the fires sweeping this land, testing kinship among mates.

The spirit of place & a place for all people. A sacrifice running deep in the veins of all Australians.

  • Green signifies re-birth, a place where anyone can start anew.

Through fire, much of our unique fauna & flora has adapted to thrive; & so too has our collective history shaped us a nation.

We are a land of opportunity, of untapped potential; waiting on the rains to come, & springing to life once they do.

A land of new beginnings & a fair go for all.

  • The leaping kangaroo symbolises progress & carries forth its same meaning as on our Coat of Arms: 'the nation moving ever forward'.

It is a well-established symbol already flown with pride on a current Flag of Australia, that of our Royal Australian Air Force Ensign.
We have honoured its design by keeping the current stylisation & thematically placing it within the Golden Flyer.

Facing the mast, the leaping kangaroo strongly bounds into headwinds unknown. Together with the Golden Flyer it portrays, all Australians & who we are as a people, in progress forward & in unity.

The Meaning Behind Each Colour

Use of the same Green & Gold as on our National Colours also serves to carry fourth that very same meaning & symbolism :

> Gold conjures images of Australia’s beaches, mineral wealth, grain harvests, & the fleece of Australian wool.

> Green evokes the forests, eucalyptus trees, & pastures of the Australian landscape.
